Phuket Thailand - If you love shopping then Phuket City is the place to go. Many of the same items that are sold at Patong and other beach resorts on the island are cheaper in the city.
The “Old Town” along Montri, Phang Nga, Rassada and Yaowarat roads, are a number of Phuket's better handicraft, souvenir and antique shops. Walking around this area is also a great opportunity to witness some of Phuket's remaining sino-portuguese architecture, which even today are used for the shop houses and homes
On Ranong road, one can experience the sights and sounds (and smells) of a Thai fresh market at the Downtown market next to the beach-bus station. Where the locals gather to buy fresh fruits (phuket’s pineapples are superb), vegetables and meats, there are also some basic but great clothing items for sale.
For more clothes, there are the weekend markets that sell cheap clothing as well as shoes, jewelry, household items, plants and pets among other things. These markets tend to be set up in car parks or unused space, so be warned they can be hot, crowded and if it should rain extremely mucky, so wear the right clothing when visiting.
Phuket City has a few department stores selling a wide range of items as well many independent local stores.
However, if one is after brands and style, then visit Central Festival Phuket located on the Bypass road (Chalermprakiat Rd.), on the edge of the city. This recently opened modern shopping mall with a department store is one of the shopping places to visit. There are also numerous restaurants and an excellent cinema in the mall.
Just opposite Central Festival Phuket is Big C and Tesco Lotus supercentres. These are large hypermarkets with attached shopping centres containing local shops and restaurants.
For those interested in furniture Index Living Mall, similar to that of Ikea, is the latest addition to Phuket Island. This huge furniture superstore offers local furniture, designer handicrafts as well as with a handful of smaller shops and restaurants.
In the centre of the Phuket city, on the corner of Tilok Uthit 1 road, is http://www.phuket.net/directory/Detailed/1408.htm Robinson Centre department store. Although fairly small it offers has a good range of brand name clothing. Further down the same road is Ocean Shopping Mall, an even smaller department store. The second floor is worth a look for the clothes. Many of the items you will see along the stalls in Patong can be found here for less, as well as many other fashion items and accessories. There are also a few stalls and shops along Tilok Uthit road selling clothes and souvenirs.
